You must have heard about Laura Mvula, she’s everywhere just now. Even if you don’t recognise the name you’ll have properly heard either her new single, That’s Alright, or the last one, Green Garden.

She’s a Birmingham born soul singer-songwriter. Her voice is amazing, reminds me of Erykah Badu and Billie Holiday, while at the same time being completely different to them. Her music is some of the most original I’ve heard recently. It has mixes of jazz, soul, gospel and God knows what else. I love that her band is a bit of a family affair too with her sister playing violin and brother on cello.

This is the new single, That’s Alright. The first few bars completely hooks you, that beat is so catchy. The bridge is uplifting with the rest of the instrumental kicking in. The lyrics are brilliant too with a powerful positive message, whether directed to the listener or just to herself, I love it.

She is definitely my new girl crush, not only for her music but her unquie style too. Who since Sinead O’Connor has been able to make a skinhead sexy and cool.
